Industry Clusters
In the State of Washington, industry cluster analysis is performed by the State-sanctioned regional workforce development organizations (workforce boards). The City of Lacey is the northeastern most urbanized city on the Interstate-5 corridor within its workforce region. The State-sanctioned workforce board that covers the region that includes Lacey, is primarily made up of geographically large, very rural counties to the west and south. Lacey’s eastern city limit is less than five miles from the border with Pierce County, which includes the cities of Tacoma, Lakewood, and DuPont. Lacey has far more in common with Pierce County, and its cities. They are urban, and they share far more cross-jurisdictional economic activity with each other. For that reason, the industry clusters for both the workforce board that includes Lacey (Pacific Mountain Workforce Development) and Pierce County (Tacoma-Pierce County Workforce Development) are presented here. In addition, because King County (Seattle and Bellevue) is only 21 miles further up the Interstate-5 corridor, and due to the high level of cross-jurisdictional activity between Lacey and King County, cluster information for King County is also presented.
